Lifeguarding is an excellent way for teens and young adults to earn money while developing crucial life skills. To become a certified lifeguard, participants must complete a course from a national accrediting agency like the American Red Cross. These courses typically run 20-30 hours in length and may include an online pre-class portion.

Prior to the class, participants should be prepared to demonstrate physical competency through these tasks:

  • Swim at least 300 yards using breaststroke, freestyle, or a combination of both.

  • Swim 20 yards, dive down seven feet to retrieve a ten-pound weight, and swim back to the start within one minute, forty seconds.

  • Tread water for two minutes, using only their legs.

In addition to learning water rescue techniques, participants will also gain training in CPR, AED, and first aid. Understanding how to respond quickly and effectively during emergencies is essential, as well as mastering preventative measures to help avoid drownings and injuries.
