The reconstruction of WIS 32 (North Lake Drive) is set to resume on Friday, February 28, 2025.

The project is ramping up in 2025, with new closures and detours impacting drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians along Milwaukee’s east side and Shorewood. This next phase of construction will extend from Edgewood Avenue to Kensington Boulevard and is expected to continue through late fall 2025.

Phase 1 of the construction was completed in 2024, and Phase 2 is set to wrap up and conclude this year. During this construction, access to the Oak Leaf Trail (along the east limits of the project) will remain open at all times. Access to business and residences will be maintained.

What’s Changing?

Lake Drive Construction 2025

Construction scope

The project, led by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) and the City of Milwaukee, includes:

New road and driveway approaches for a smoother ride.
ADA-compliant curb ramps to improve accessibility.
Better drainage to prevent standing water and flooding.
Upgraded traffic lights and signals to enhance safety.
A new protected bike lane, improving connectivity for cyclists.

What to Expect During Construction

🚧 Starting Friday, February 28, 2025:

  • North Lake Drive will be closed to all through traffic between Edgewood Avenue and Kensington Boulevard.

  • One lane of southbound traffic will remain open for local access.

  • Short-term full closures will occur at Jarvis Street for underground utility work, with a pedestrian detour in place.

  • Pedestrian access will be maintained on the west side of WIS 32.

  • Access to Atwater Park and the Shorewood Nature Preserve will remain open.

Detours and Alternate Routes

  • Lincoln Memorial Drive users should take Kenwood Boulevard, Oakland Avenue, and Hampton Road.

  • WIS 32 drivers should detour via North Avenue, Oakland Avenue, and Hampton Road.

  • Residents and businesses within the work zone should use the nearest alternative access point to enter and exit the area.

The end result will be a safer, more accessible corridor for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. For real-time updates and traffic information, visit engage.milwaukee.gov/lake-drive.
