Rock Climbing Adventures for Milwaukee’s North Shore Families

Milwaukee area offers a growing range of climbing options for families and beginners. Local recreation departments often partner with nearby facilities to give kids a taste of climbing. For example, Brown Deer’s parks & rec runs indoor climbing classes for ages 5–8 and 9–14 at the Novak Family Fieldhouse (8200 N. 60th St), focusing on basic techniques, bouldering and fun challenges. Sessions are typically a few weeks long, costing about $45 (residents) for the whole series.

Shorewood, Bayside and Fox Point residents can register through their own recreation departments, which use these same Brown Deer classes. In past seasons Shorewood’s rec guide listed beginner climbing courses at Brown Deer with similar fees (roughly $40–50) and age groups, indicating a community-wide approach to youth climbing education.

Brown Deer/Nicolet Recreation also runs youth climbing programs. (For instance, Shorewood’s rec course list shows “Rock Climbing, Beginner” classes meeting at Brown Deer’s facilities.) These public classes emphasize safe climbing form and games. In short, North Shore families needn’t venture far – local rec centers regularly offer beginner climbing courses that are very accessible for children and parents alike.

Indoor Climbing Gyms in Greater Milwaukee

For more advanced or frequent climbers, the Milwaukee area has several dedicated gyms. Milwaukee Turner Hall Rock Gym (Downtown Milwaukee) is a classic choice. It’s the state’s oldest climbing gym, located in the basement of historic Turners Hall, and is well known for its friendly, community atmosphere. The facility boasts 25-foot top-rope and lead walls (routes up to 5.12 difficulty), two bouldering areas, an indoor ice-climbing wall, and training features like a Moon Board, “Rage Cage” pull-up rig, campus board and treadwall. An on-site weight room, locker rooms with showers, and knowledgeable staff (including climbing instructors and belayers) round out the experience. Classes and clinics are offered, and rental gear is available. A day pass costs only about $9 making it an economical way for families to climb together.

The Turner Hall gym’s angled walls and colorful holds invite climbers of all ages. Children can try short traverses on the bouldering wall (no ropes needed) or learn belaying on the ropes walls while parents supervise or join in. The staff are accustomed to teaching beginners and often celebrate kids’ first climbs.

Adventure Rock is the other big local gym brand. Adventure Rock has two Wisconsin locations: one in the western suburbs (Pewaukee/Brookfield) and a newer one in Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood (2240 N Commerce St, opened 2015). The Pewaukee gym is huge – with 35-foot walls and over 40 top-rope routes, plus lead climbing areas – and is considered the largest gym in southeastern Wisconsin. A day pass is around $15 and includes harness rental; shoes can be rented or brought from home. The gym has a retail pro shop and actively changes routes, so returning climbers always have new problems to try. Classes and camps are available year-round (see Youth programs below). Adventure Rock’s Milwaukee (Riverwest) location is smaller but still offers tall walls (up to 42 feet) and bouldering. Both gyms are very family-friendly: kids can climb with or without shoe rentals, and parent–child belaying is allowed under staff guidance.

In addition to dedicated climbing gyms, some indoor adventure parks include climbing walls. For example, Urban Air Adventure Park – Milwaukee West (in suburban Brookfield) lists Climbing Walls among its attractions. This facility is primarily a trampoline/obstacle park, but its “Climbing Hill” and “Leap of Faith” obstacles let kids scale a short rock wall or ledge. Urban Air is not a traditional climbing gym, but it offers a climbing experience in a less-technical, open-play setting and is popular for kids’ parties and family outings. (Of course, all visiting climbers – even at trampoline parks – should follow safety rules and adult supervision.)

Youth Climbing Teams, Classes and Camps

A climber ascends one of Adventure Rock's towering indoor walls, showcasing the vibrant and challenging routes that cater to all skill levels.

Beyond open-gym climbing, there are structured climbing teams and camps for youth. Adventure Rock runs a multi-level youth team program (the Adventure Rock Climbing Team, ARCT). Entry-level “Academy” courses are six-week sessions for climbers ages 7–9 and 10–13, where coaches teach technique and build strength and teamwork. After academy, climbers can join training or competition teams. Adventure Rock also hosts seasonal camps: half- and full-day camps keep kids active with climbing games and challenges (e.g. summer climb camps for elementary-aged kids).

For high schoolers, Adventure Rock is involved in the Wisconsin High School Climbing League. Several North Shore high schools have climbing teams: for instance, Shorewood and Whitefish Bay teams both practice at Adventure Rock Milwaukee one evening per week. These programs are open to all ability levels and help students train for competitions if they wish.

Scouts and special groups can also climb. Adventure Rock offers Boy Scout Climbing Merit Badge classes: certified instructors guide scouts through knots, belaying, rappelling and Leave No Trace principles. In short, local gyms partner with schools, scouts and summer programs to make climbing accessible and fun for young people.

Outdoor Climbing Opportunities

Climbers of all ages tackle the Urban Ecology Center's 40-foot outdoor climbing wall at Riverside Park.

The Urban Ecology Center’s Riverside Park branch boasts a dramatic three-story, open-air climbing tower that rises roughly 40 feet above the Milwaukee River, giving kids and adults a thrilling skyline view when they reach the top. The Center runs seasonal “On Belay!” sessions where climbers ages 6 and up can tackle the wall under the supervision of trained staff; helmets, harnesses and all belay gear are included, so families can simply show up in closed-toe shoes and start climbing. Registration is encouraged and spots typically run about $12–$15 per climber (with member discounts available), making it one of the most affordable outdoor climbing experiences in the metro area. The tower’s shaded riverside setting, nature-center amenities and upbeat educators create a relaxed, confidence-building environment—perfect for a first ascent, a family outing, or even a birthday adventure on ropes.

Birthday Parties & Special Events

Many families celebrate birthdays by climbing together. Adventure Rock offers dedicated climbing birthday parties: a two-hour package for ages 6+ includes a party host, use of a private room, plates and utensils, and fun climbing activities. The gym provides harnesses; you supply cake and decorations. Pricing starts around $225 for up to 10 children (about $18 for each additional climber). Similarly, Milwaukee Turners accommodates group events by appointment. Their group rate is about $220 for up to 12 youth (with gear and instruction included) so small birthday parties or Scout outings can book a private session. Even Urban Air and other indoor play centers let you plan climbing-themed parties. In short, venues across the area have party packages that make it easy to host an active, memorable birthday.

With so many options – rec center courses, climbing gyms, youth teams and outdoor walls – Milwaukee’s North Shore families can find a climbing outlet that fits their interests. Even if you’ve never belayed a child before, beginner-friendly programs and patient staff are ready to help you get started. Whether it’s climbing with your kindergartner on the boulder pads or training a middle-schooler for competitions, the local climbing community is encouraging and welcoming. So grab the harness, chalk up the kids, and look forward to a new family adventure on the wall
